THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE PHOTO EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO THE HISTORICAL VISIT OF HER MAJESTY QUEEN BEATRIX TO LITHUANIA
On the 15th of October, the official opening of the photo exhibition „Her Majesty in Lithuania and other famous people“ of the Lithuanian photographer Algimantas Aleksandravicius took place at the Atrium of The Hague City Hall. The photographs, which include moments of the historic visit of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix to Lithuania in June as well as portraits of famous influences in the word of culture, art and theatre, are on display in the Atrium. The photo exhibition was opened by The Ambassador of Lithuania to the Netherlands Vaidotas Verba and the Deputy Mayor of The Hague Mr. Frits Huffnagel.
In his greeting addressed to representatives of the Royal House, the Municipality of The Hague, the diplomatic corps and representatives of the Lithuanian community, the Ambassador stressed that the visit of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix to Lithuania, captured on film, is an important event in the history of Lithuanian-Dutch relations, and the portraits of other famous people should stimulate understanding of and interest in each other.
A. Aleksandravicius, who was acknowledged in 2003 as being the best European portraitist, masterly captured the meeting of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix with students, her walk in The Old Town of Vilnius, and her visits to the Trakai Island Castle and to Kaunas. In the context of the celebration of the one thousand year anniversary of the first documented mention of the name 'Lithuania', and within the context of “Vilnius – Cultural capital 2009”, portraits of famous Lithuanian and world cultural, theatre, sport influences are presented to the Dutch public.
A collection of national costumes of various regions of Lithuania was presented to the guests of the opening ceremony of the exhibition. The collection was created by specialists of the Ethnical culture department of the Lithuanian folk culture centre.
The organizers of the exhibition are The Embassy of Lithuania to the Netherlands, The Municipality of the Hague and the Dutch Lithuanian Culture centre.
The exhibition will be on display at the Atrium of the City Hall until October 29th.
