The SHADOW OF HEAVEN is about the family members of the composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875-1911) and their fate.
Čiurlionis: composer, visual artist, genius, madman. He stood at the origin of the national state of Lithuania. He presented a new universe, a new self image. A cultural hero, too, around the turn of the century. In the film we meet Čiurlionis' nieces, Dana Zakiene and Ariadna Čiurlionyte, his granddaughter and sculptor Dalia Palukaitiene, his great-grand child and pianist Rokas Zubovas, and other relatives. Many of them are artists, too, but what does it mean to grow up in the shadow of a genius? Through their stories their family history unfolds. The universal themes are reflected in their personal memories.
Shot in black and white, the film is interspersed with colour paintings and the unique photographs taken by M. K. Čiurlionis.
The showing of the film will be preceded by a short introduction about Čiurlionis' place and significance in early 20th century music history, on the eve of the formation of a new Europe. This introduction will be given by Dr. Frans Brouwer, musicologist and lecturer on Cultural Entrepreneurship at several universities and colleges throughout Europe.
“Shadow of Heaven” is the first showing of a series of films about the European artists of around the turn of the century, organized by various European cultural institutions in the Netherlands.
