THE AMBASSADOR OF LITHUANIA PRESENTED LETTERS OF CREDENCE TO THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE OPCW
On 20 September 2007, Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the Netherlands H.E. Mr. Vaidotas Verba presented the letters of credence to the Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of the Chemical Weapons (OPCW), H.E. Mr. Rogelio Pfirter. Mr. Verba became the third Permanent Representative of Lithuania to this organization.
The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has been established to implement the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) - an international treaty which bans the development, production, stockpiling, transfer and use of chemical weapons, and also stipulates their timely destruction. The Convention entered into force on 29 april 1997 and mandated the OPCW to eliminate the scourge of chemical weapons forever and to verify the destruction of the declared chemical weapons stockpiles within stipulated deadlines. On 27 September 2007, a high level meeting to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Chemical Weapons Convention will take place at the Headquarters of the UN in New York.
