EVALDAS STANKEVICIUS AT THE SERIES OF DEBATES "CHANGING EUROPE CHANGING ARTS" IN AMSTERDAM
The arts and societies in transition in today’s Europe29 November 2010,14.00 – 18.00 hrs, Goethe Institut, AmsterdamIn a series of four public sessions chaired by columnist-author Bas Heijne, SICA and EUNIC Netherlands examine how cultural diversity is manifested in the contemporary art sector across nine European countries. The presented art initiatives demonstrate innovative strategies for social engagement with serious cultural projects. The sessions bring a new and international perspective to national debates.
On Monday, the 29th of November 2010, featuring Árpad Schilling, Krétakör theatre company (Hungary), Neta Ariël, Ma'alah School for Television, Film and the Arts (Israel) and Evaldas Stankevicius Contemporary Art Centre (CAC), Vilnius (Lithuania).Evaldas Stankevicius is deputy director at CAC in Vilnius since 2009. Earlier he worked as curator at CAC and from 2002 till 2007 he was Culture Attaché of the Republic of Lithuania to the Republic of Poland. CAC is with exhibition space of 2400 square meters the largest venue for contemporary art in the Baltic States. The CAC is a non-collection based institution committed to developing a broad range of international and Lithuanian exhibition projects. It also presents a wide range of public programs, including lectures, seminars, performances, film and video screenings, and live new music events.
Árpád Schilling founded Krétakör in 1995. Krétakör is a professional performing arts group, specializing in the organization of social events, with the involvement of the field of social science. The participants of such social performances elaborate on their personal life stories with the guidance of Krétakör's artistic team, in order to adapt these stories into a theatrical context. In every case, the result is an original and unique artistic product, that captures its audience through the framework of traditional theatre. In 2005 Krétakör performed on the beach of the Dutch island Terschelling during the Oerol Festival.
Neta Ariël is director of Ma'aleh's school since 2001. She graduated in political science and theater studies from Hebrew University, Jerusalem. She also studied communications at Hebrew University and Directing and Producing through the Open University program. The Ma'aleh College of Television, Film and the Arts is situated between the old and new cities of Jerusalem in Israel. Ma'aleh brings many of the issues affecting Israelis and Jews today to the sceen. Ma'aleh fictional and documentary films are shown at film festivals all over the world. The films highlight conflict and dilemma in the life of the individual and the community. The affect of Jewish law upon the life of the individual bring forth a heated dialogue and debate in Jewish communities worldwide. The school also runs a number of successful social projects.
Within EUNIC Netherlands, the organizers of this session are the Embassy of the Republic of Hungary, the Embassy of Israel and the Dutch Lithuanian Culture Centre (Litouws Cultureel Centrum).
