On 6 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Zbigniew Rau, who was visiting Vilnius on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Poland.

During the meeting, the Foreign Ministers discussed the difficult situation with irregular migration at the eastern borders of the European Union. Landsbergis thanked Poland for its support to prevent irregular migration flows - a hybrid attack by Alexander Lukashenko's regime.

“Poland's solidarity with Lithuania is of particular importance to us in this sphere,” said Landsbergis.

The Foreign Ministers also discussed relations with Belarus and Russia in the context of the upcoming Zapad-2021 military exercise, the situation in Afghanistan and potential threats associated with it. Landsbergis informed his Polish counterpart about the country's efforts to prevent the electricity generated by the Ostrovets nuclear power plant from entering the Lithuanian power market and stressed the need to prepare for the synchronisation of the country with the Central European grid as soon as possible.

Landsbergis and Rau also attended the opening of the exhibition “Poland and Lithuania – together for freedom", dedicated to cooperation between the two freedom movements – Sąjūdis (the Reform Movement of Lithuania) and Solidarity (Solidarność) – in 1989-1990.

Lithuania and Poland re-established their diplomatic relations on 5 September 1991.
